WE NEED ACTION ON THE BANKS NOT WORDS
The PLP must use its majority to change the law on the Central Bank. That turns out to be the real problem in the banking system. The Prime Minister Philip Davis met with the clearinghouse banks. He told them in the meeting that he does not want to use the statute law to stop what they are doing to Bahamian consumers, the abuse that we all suffer but he will if necessary. This comes against the backdrop of complaints here in The Bahamas and in Barbados and Jamaica about the banks. The problem the Prime Minister has is that the Central Bank takes the position it appears that they are a law unto themselves. They appear entirely unsympathetic to the plight of consumers of banking services,. They do not give Bahamians banking licences when they apply and instead of offering redress for Bahamian consumers, one of their staff attacked Bahamian consumers. So for us, maybe it is time to change the law on the Central Bank to give them a reality check, so that fiscal and monetary policy can line up and consumers can see in the bank a protector not an attacker.
