WE MUST SOLVE THE PENSION PROBLEM
The House of Assembly passed three special pension bills for Bahamians who had worked in the public service but had disabilities in terms of the continuous service for thirty years or more in order to get a full pension. They were Mary Mitchell, former Treasurer; Raymond Mackey, former Deputy Superintendent of Police; Tellis Bethel, former Commodore of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force; and J Edison Delaveaux ( deceased) former Comptroller of Customs. The Minister for the Public Service Fred Mitchell said that what was needed was national pension legislation in order to solve the problem for all employees in the country. He said that the PLP had passed social security legislation with National Insurance. It had passed National Health Insurance. The last piece in the puzzle was national pension legislation. The bills passed the House on Wednesday 23 March 2022 with the unanimous support of the House.
