THE LOS ANGELES CONSULATE OPENS
Congratulations are in order to The Bahamas government for the opening of its Consulate General in Los Angeles to serve the Bahamian community on the west coast of the United States. The official opening was presided over by the Prime Minister Philip Davis on Monday 19 February 2024, on the eve of the birthday of the late Sidney Poitier, the academy award winning Bahamian actor. Mr. Poitier would have been 97 this year if he were alive. His widow Joanna and their two daughters cut the ribbon for the occasion. The Mayor of Los Angeles Karen Bass attended. The Foreign Minister Fred Mitchell said that Sidney Poiter planted the Bahamian flag in Los Angels and it was only fitting that we opened the consulate on the eve of his birthday and remember him. The Consul General is a career diplomat Joy Newbold.
