The youth of South Andros were the focus of their district during the weekend of July 16th – 18th, as attention and emphasis was placed on that community’s development and the part that youth play in it. A group of 8 young people from out of New Providence, simply called the South Andros Community Project gave their time and talent while carrying out programmes designed to further enhance the Community youth involvement.
The project spearheaded by Serfent Rolle organized a Youth Development Day that was held on Friday 16th of July at the Johnson Bay Senior High School where over 150 children between the ages of 8 and 16 were able to participate in workshops that focused on Culture, Team Work, the Environment and Respect. The children were able to enjoy lively presentations by group leaders who later on used the lessons taught in games and contests that followed for the eager participants. Some children were delighted to take pictures in a Junkanoo costume and all were treated to a lunch.
The group attended on Saturday the 17th the worship service at the Macedonia Seventh Day Adventist Church. Serfent Rolle, while delivering brief remarks, reminded the church to be proud of their accomplishments and to “continue to produce hard working and fearless members of the South Andros Community”. Elder Norward Rahming while delivering the sermon, expressed on behalf of the community his thanks to the group for a job well done and invited them to continue in their efforts.
On Saturday afternoon the group took time out to visit with five senior citizens of the community, each telling their own story about South Andros’ past and their hopes for it’s future. Mario Smith an assistant coordinator of the group says “ After meeting with the senior citizens this evening, it comes as no surprise that the young people here are so willing to contribute to the development of their community, there is a remarkable unity here ”.
A Youth Town Meeting at the Senior High School geared towards young adults was held on Saturday 17th. Many local and national issues were discussed, with the overall affect on South Andros being of major concern. Development, employment and environmental concerns of the Community were highlighted. Member of Parliament for the area Mr. Whitney Bastian underscored the importance for increased dialogue amongst the youth and his support of the activities, stating that “Some very good ideas and concerns were brought to light as a result of the meeting and what these young people from Nassau have done this weekend will not be forgotten, everyone is appreciative”.
Serfent Rolle who served as Project Coordinator says that “We are extremely appreciative to the people of South Andros for accepting this programme, the response was extremely positive and made our trip worthwhile”. Rolle went on to add that, the group intends to make this an annual event and has already made plans to include another Family Island as a part of its project for next year.
The group expressed thanks to the various sponsors of the programme which include The Scribes Ltd., Tony’s Cabinet Supply, Bahamian Springs, Sunshine Florists, Coca Cola, Sunrise Inn Kemp’s Bay, Western Air Commonwealth Bank and Commonwealth Brewery as well as various individuals committed to assisting the Bahamian community.
