COMMENT OF THE WEEK
So the monarchists were in a thrall all of last week as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge came to The Bahamas filling in for their grand mother who is celebrating 75 years as Queen of The Bahamas. Everyone it seems who was anyone wanted an invitation to the various functions and shuffling around to get a glimpse of the celebrity couple who have no power but well they are famous and so one guesses people wanted to be near.
One supposes it was also a chance to live in a fairy tale. Two beautiful young people who land on a big jet, wear fancy clothes and get escorted around the country without let or hindrance. Crowds lined the sides of the freshly paved roads to watch the junkanoo parade put on for them, entertained them with a Regatta at the Montagu Beach.
They got an honour guard when they arrived at the airport.
Then they jetted off to Abaco to look upon the victims of Dorian. Flew to Grand Bahama in The Bahamas.
The invitations to die for were those for the state ball. Black tie and fancy dresses and hairdos for the women.
There was a small band of Rastas who tried to tell the society: hey wait a minute. The police tried to shut them down but eventually their demo went on.
The reparations committee argued that the whole thing was ironic in the face of the British role in slavery.
The republic movement in the country is on the back for trying to explain why this royalty stuff is all nonsense and should have been dispensed with ages ago.
But one guesses that the country needs to indulge itself in some escapism. Thus all of us preening and grinning and shuffling and bowing.
With the couple now safely back in London; back to reality for both us and them.
