Acting Justice Albury, who previously served as Deputy Chief Magistrate was born on the island of Exuma. She received her early education in New Providence. After graduating from the Government High School, she attended the University of the West Indies, where she attained a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) Degree in Spanish and English. She later received a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Miami.
Prior to entering the legal profession she worked as a teacher and as a public administrator in various government ministries. In the latter capacity, while at the Ministry of Home Affairs, she participated in the United States International Visitor Programme when he conducted a study tour of the U.S. Federal Prison System on behalf of The Bahamas Government.
Upon the completion of her legal studies and call to The Bahamas Bar 1985, she entered private practice.
She was appointed a Stipendiary and Circuit Magistrate in 1989. Acting Justice Albury has presided as a magistrate in the traffic, juvenile, civil and criminal courts and acted as Registrar of the Court of Appeal. Since 2000, she presided in the Family Court from which court she now comes to the Supreme Court Bench.
As a Magistrate, she has represented The Bahamas at several international fora. In 1998 she completed an Intensive Judicial Education Course at Dalhousie University and is a fellow of the Commonwealth Judicial Education Institute. She is also a trained mediator in alternative dispute resolution.
Mrs. Albury was appointed Senior Magistrate in 2003 and Deputy Chief Magistrate in 2005. She previously served as Chairman of the Rent Control Board and currently serves as legal advisor to the New Providence Licensing Authority.
Mrs. Albury’s civic activities have included work with the Dundas Centre’s Beaux Arts Ball Committee and the Bahamas Association for the Mentally Retarded. She is a member of the National Trust and Nassau Music Society. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Nazareth Centre, the Catholic Archdiocese Social Ministry Advisory Group, and chaired the Bahamas AIDs Foundation Publication Committee.
Mrs. Albury is keenly interested in the Arts and is also a published author. Her work has been anthologized in several publications including: The College of The Bahamas Anthology of Bahamian Literature, the Caribbean Writer, a University of the Virgin Islands publication and, most recently, “Under the Moon and Over the Sea”, a collection of Caribbean poetry published by Walker Brothers in London. In 1994, she published a collection of her poetry, short stories and satirical essays called Perspectives From Inner Windows, which is currently studied in local schools as part of the BGCSE syllabus. Mrs. Albury’s work is also included in textbooks used in Caribbean schools.
The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority internationally recognized Mrs. Albury for her contribution to the law and the arts in The Bahamas in 1998 when she was inducted as a Honorary Soror.
Mrs. Albury attends St. Anselm's Catholic Church where she serves as a Eucharistic Minister, a member of the Stewardship Committee and a member of the Family Life Ministry.
Mrs. Albury’s hobbies include writing, reading, especially
historical biographies, gourmet cooking and travel. She is married
to Basil Albury and they have two adult daughters, Mrs. Candia Albury Ferguson,
Attorney at Law and Dr. Caryn Albury and three grandchildren.
