St. Peter's Basilica
Rome
Tuesday 29th June, 2004
Scores of Bahamians travelled to Rome on the Pallium pilgrimage with Roman Catholic Archbishop Patrick Pinder. Archbishop Pinder is shown arriving at the Vatican, accompanied by Monsignor Preston Moss, the Acting Administrator of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nassau and Vatican officials.
Some of the many Bahamians who travelled to Rome to witness the historic event.
Newly appointed Archbishops from around the world travelled to Rome for the ceremony. Archbishop Pinder is seen in this photograph, just right of centre.
The ceremony to present the Pallium was held on the church feast day of St. Peter and St. Paul for which the Patriarch of the Eastern Orthodox church was at the Vatican at the invitation of the Pope. His Holiness is shown here with Patriarch Athenagoras of Constantinople.
Archbishop Lawrence Burke, now Archbishop of Kingston, but formerly of the archdiocese of Nassau was also among those receiving the pallium.
Archbishops Burke and Pinder are shown in this photograph with Monsignor Preston Moss, left. At right, Archbishop Pinder poses with two noted Bahamians who were among those at the ceremony. Anglican Archdeacon the Venerable I. Ranfurly Brown, left and the former Governor General and former Chancellor of the Anglican Archdiocese Sir Orville Turnquest, right.
Following the pallium ceremony, a reception and banquet was held in Rome at the Hotel Columbus at Via Dela Conciliazione. Archbishops Burke and Pinder are shown standing in the background with Sir Orville and Lady Turnquest seated in the foreground. Also pictured in the background at right are Dr. Jean Turnquest and husband Mr. Oswald Brown, Editor of the Freeport News.
Also among the Bahamians attending were Chief Justice Sir Burton Hall and Lady Camille Hall. In addition to being knighted by the Queen, Sir Burton is also a Knight of the Papal order. Sir Burton and Lady Hall are at right in the group photo below.
