Miriam Roker Passes Away In Fox Hill Age 100
On the occasion of her 100th birthday last November, the Deputy to the Governor General paid Miriam Roker a visit in Fox Hill. Fox Hill MP Fred Mitchell wrote this:
21 March 2024
I wish to announce with regret the passing of Elder Miriam Roker of the Mt Carey Baptist Church community in Fox Hill, retired teacher and community leader. She passed away in the waning hours of the day, the wee hours of the morning. She was 100 years old.
All my time in Fox Hill, since I came here in 1997, Ms Roker has been an iconic figure. She was revered for service as a teacher at Sandilands Primary and L W Young. She led the Sunday School at her church. Hundreds if not thousands of little ones, boys and girls passed through her capable hands. She was loving, gentle and kind.
I was so happy, after years of my advocacy, that the Board of the Fox Hill Community Centre honoured her with naming the hall the Miriam Roker Hall. She will always be remembered.
She was a devout Christian woman. She was a faithful promoter of young people. She was an example of godly rectitude. When you speak of Ms Roker, you think only of superlatives.
Ms Roker now belongs to the ages and joins the company of the saints who have gone on before us. We will miss her.
On behalf of the Fox Hill constituency, I offer my condolences to her family, to her caregivers and friends.
May she rest in peace.
