HAITI ONCE MORE ON THE BRINK
The 7 February 2024 date was supposed to be the date by which the interim regime of Prime Minister Ariel Henry of Haiti would demit office, following presidential elections. Of course, no elections have been held and are likely to be held in the near future. The term of the legislature expired and so there are no senators or parliamentarians to pass laws or ratify them, Haiti has been in a state of complete disorder since the President was assassinated. Prime Minister Henry has been negotiating with the international community to find a solution but he does not have willing partners in Haiti. The latest development is the thug who overthrew former President Jean Bertrand Aristide is back in Haiti after a term of imprisonment in the United States and Guy Philipe led a group of demonstrators who threatened to completely disrupt Haiti if Prime Minister Henry did not resign by 11 a.m. on the 7th January 2024. That did not happen and as of today, the demos have dissipated. The Henry government still has the support of the intentional community and the international community including The Bahamas continues to try and forge some kind of solution to restore legitimacy to governing in that troubled republic.
