When the history of our National Flag Carrier is written the late Henry L. Woods will be prominently placed high up on the chart for his outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Bahamasair.

Henry Woods and Capt. Jehu Edwards were young men who lived on Augusta Street in the iconic community of Bain Town during the 1950’s. They expressed a strong interest in aviation and Henry Woods followed his dreams, going on to become an Aviation specialist respected around the world.

Following the resignation of Paul Major as Managing Director in 2006, the Board of Directors of Bahamasair recommended the promotion of Henry L. Woods to the post of Managing Director and it was my profound pleasure as the then Minister of Works and Utilities and Bahamasair to approve the Board’s nominee.

The record will show that the National Flag Carrier has made significant advancement during Henry Wood’s tenure. These include cost savings through the negotiation of a new fuel supply contract; improved on time departures; improved financial performance and the recent $100 million aircraft fleet replacement project to further enhance the operational efficiency, safety and improved financial performance of the National Flag Carrier. These are significant achievements for the National Flag Carrier. Woods was a team player and always worked in good faith to ensure industrial harmony, benefitting the airline’s pilots, mechanics and support staff in The Bahamas and in the state of Florida, USA.

Henry Woods was proud of the safety record of Bahamasair whose record since inception has been no loss of life. A mild mannered and very approachable person, Henry was a no nonsense professional who insisted on perfection and discipline; he was also a walking encyclopedia of aviation in the Commonwealth of the Bahamas.

Henry Woods was a faithful and loyal husband to his wife Gail Teddie and their daughter Phylicia, both of whom he loved dearly. They were the center of his universe.

I knew of the very close friendship Henry shared with both Prime Minister Perry G. Christie and Deputy Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis and remember well Henry’s expression of deep concern in the wake of rumors of a possible leadership race between the two. My lifelong friend was greatly relieved when that rumor was put to bed.

On behalf of the Progressive Liberal Party I extend my sincere condolences to Henry’s wife Teddie, his daughter Phylicia, his grandson, his sister Mary and other family members and the Bahamasair Family.

Henry Woods will be sadly missed by all.

May his soul rest in peace and rise in glory.
